In Class: CPR for Duval and Palm Beach Counties

Cardiac arrest, an electrical malfunction in the heart that causes an irregular heartbeat and disrupts the flow of blood to the brain, lungs and other organs, is a leading cause of death. Each year, over 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the United States.

When a person has a cardiac arrest, survival depends on immediately getting CPR from someone nearby. Receiving immediate CPR can double or triple the chance of survival for a cardiac arrest victim. Sadly, that happens less than 10% of the time.

The American Heart Association is working to pass state and local policies across the country that would require students to learn hands-only CPR before they graduate high school. This will increase the number of people who are trained and feel comfortable performing life-saving CPR.

Thanks to these efforts, 2.2 million public school students across 37 states become trained lifesavers every year!

We are excited to announce that both Duval County and Palm Beach County, Florida recently have passed policies stating students will receive CPR training before graduation.

Thank you to the leadership within the school board for supporting this life-saving policy. Because of this, Duval County and Palm Beach County residents will have a greater chance of surviving a cardiac arrest.
